The Doctor of Philosophy (Practice-based) consists of an extensive, independent research project including creative outputs and written work supported by expert academic supervisors, and professional development activities.
The minimum qualifications for admission to PhD enrolment are: a bachelor's degree requiring at least four years of full-time study in a relevant field, and which normally includes a research component in the fourth year, leading to an honours 1 or 2A; a master's degree that entails work, normally including a significant research component; or have qualifications which in the opinion of GRC are deemed equivalent. Sound English language skills are also required.
The course consists of a creative practice project and a written exegesis, as well as professional development as part of the Monash Doctoral Program. Specialisations are available in Creative Writing, Translation Studies, Journalism, Music, and Theatre Performance.
Monash University has one of the best creative writing PhD programs in Australia, as well as the first and only full membership of CIUTI for Translation Studies in Australia. The Music and Theatre Performance programs are also considered among the most outstanding and comprehensive in the country.
This practice-based PhD program will give you the practical experience and opportunity to develop your expertise as a researcher, as well as the professional tools to make an impact in academia, industry, government, or the wider community.
