This course will teach you the skills to navigate and manoeuvre vessels up to 24 metres within Australian coastal waters, lead a crew, and develop the specialist skills needed to work as a master, chief mate or deck watchkeeper on commercial vessels, fishing charters and tourist trips.

What you'll need to get in

To enrol in this course, you'll need to have previous experience or qualifications in the maritime industry, such as a General Purpose Hand qualification or other Maritime qualification. You'll also need to be currently working in the maritime industry and have the required sea-time to obtain the AMSA licence.

Subject breakdown

The course covers a range of core units including manoeuvring a vessel up to 24 metres, supporting effective workplace relationships, observing regulations for safe vessel operation, applying basic survival skills, fighting fires on board, and performing routine maintenance and seamanship operations. You'll also learn to plan and navigate passages for vessels up to 80 metres.
