The Diploma of Interpreting covers the competencies required to interpret and convey information using specific terminology for a specific audience, preparing interpreters for work in community and business domains.
Completion of Year 12 or equivalent. Students are required to pass an enrolment assessment conducted by AIWT trainers.
The course covers core units such as applying codes and standards to ethical practice, preparing to translate or interpret, interpreting in general dialogue and monologue settings, managing interactions in general settings, and using routine subject area terminology in two languages. Elective units include building glossaries, demonstrating routine language proficiency, and sight translating.
The Australian Institute of Workplace Training (AIWT) is a Registered Training Organization (RTO) that offers this NAATI Endorsed Qualification. Upon successful completion, graduates may apply to sit a Certification Test (NAATI Certified Provisional Interpreter test) directly with NAATI.
Career prospects may include freelance interpreter, linguist or contract work with health, education, legal, business and travel agencies, as well as teaching English as a Second Language (ESL).
