Start your construction career with this foundational Certificate II program covering essential trade skills in carpentry, joinery, and general construction. Ideal for apprentices, trainees, or those entering the construction industry, you'll learn from experienced tradespeople using industry-standard tools and techniques.
Students must be domestic students (Australian or New Zealand citizens, or Australian Permanent Residents). A Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy (LLND) evaluation is conducted to identify support needs. Students require safety boots/shoes. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available for those with relevant work or life experience. No specific educational prerequisites are required, though the course is designed for those entering the construction trades.
Core Units (120 hours): Work effectively and sustainably in the Construction Industry, Plan and organise work, Carry out measurements and calculations, Undertake a basic construction project, and Apply WHS requirements, policies and procedures in the Construction Industry. Elective Units (160 hours): Choose 5 from Carpentry (Use carpentry tools and equipment, Handle carpentry materials), Joinery (Assemble components), or General electives (Apply basic levelling procedures, Work safely at heights). Total program: 280 nominal hours across 10 units of competency.
CDU is the Northern Territory's largest training provider with specialized trade training facilities and industry-standard equipment. Instructors are experienced former tradespeople who provide practical, workplace-ready training. The university offers Recognition of Prior Learning to accelerate qualification completion, and successful graduates can progress to higher qualifications such as Certificate III in Carpentry or Certificate IV in Building and Construction.
Graduates are prepared for entry-level positions as Trade Assistants or Building Laborers in the construction industry.
