Advance your engineering drafting expertise to become a civil engineering design technician. This diploma combines real-world project experience with structural analysis, CAD proficiency, and BIM collaboration skills to prepare you for increasingly complex roles in civil engineering design.
To enrol in this Diploma, you must have successfully completed the Certificate IV in Engineering Drafting. You also need to have completed Year 12 and provide TasTAFE with a copy of your Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education, or provide a qualification at Level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework delivered in English, or complete an approved language, literacy and numeracy assessment demonstrating competence at or above Exit Level 3 in both literacy and numeracy. International students must be at least 18 years old and meet IELTS 6.0 overall with no individual band below 5.0, or equivalency. A PC with Intel Core i5 equivalent processor or better with minimum 8GB RAM, Windows 11, broadband internet connection (20Mbps or faster), webcam, microphone and headphones are required.
The course covers civil engineering design principles through practical project work reflecting real industry roles. Students learn structural engineering analysis methodologies to understand structural principles underlying design projects. The curriculum includes advanced CAD software skills for producing detailed engineering drawings and 3D models. Building Information Modelling (BIM) and collaborative workflows are taught to enable team-based communication using 3D models. Project management units cover best practice techniques for managing project time and quality. Technical mathematics and force system calculations are integrated throughout. Specific design modules cover foundations, rural roads, urban roads, subdivisions, open car parks, surface and subsurface drainage, and civil concrete structures.
