Build practical skills for a career in civil construction through hands-on training in excavation, concrete work, and equipment operation. This 18-month entry-level course combines on-campus and workplace training, ideal for new and existing civil construction workers seeking to strengthen their practical abilities and advance their career.
You must be employed in the civil construction industry to undertake this course. You need access to a suitable civil construction workplace for practical training components and must be working with an appropriately experienced person. Minimum age 16 years. No specific prior qualifications required, though basic literacy and numeracy are beneficial.
Core units include planning and organising work, carrying out measurements and calculations, identifying and protecting underground services, reading and interpreting plans and job specifications, manual excavation, spreading and compacting materials, workplace communication, using hand and power tools, operating small plant and equipment, and following WHS procedures. Elective units cover construction safety preparation, tree trimming, bituminous materials handling, plant operations support, basic levelling, concrete work, pothole repair, site spill response, resource handling, material isolation and access, cutting and welding, and confined space entry.

The qualification provides a foundation for advancement to Certificate IV qualifications in Civil Construction Plant Operations or Civil Construction Supervision, opening pathways to supervisory and management roles within the civil construction industry.
