Become a licensed builder or site supervisor with this nationally recognised Certificate IV. Gain practical skills to manage residential and light commercial construction projects, from reading plans to supervising teams and ensuring compliance with building codes.
There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification. However, applicants should ideally have current industry experience in building and construction, strong time management and organisational skills. You must be at least 16 years old to enrol at TasTAFE. A computer with reliable internet connection is recommended but not required, as TasTAFE provides computers for student use during business hours. Upon enrolment, you will receive a Microsoft Office license.
The course covers practical, job-ready skills including: applying building codes, standards and structural principles; reading and interpreting construction drawings and site plans; planning, scheduling and supervising construction work; estimating costs and administering contracts; applying work health and safety practices on construction sites; managing materials, quality control and team communication; and conducting site surveys and set-out procedures. Core units include building codes application, work health and safety management, building and construction work planning, site communication and administration, legal requirements, structural principles, plan interpretation, building sketches and drawings, site surveys and set-out procedures, waste minimisation, and building codes for various building classes. Elective units cover business finance management, project quality management, construction contracts, cost estimation, labour and material scheduling, material procurement and storage, business dispute resolution, building applications and approvals, and energy-efficient building principles.

Upon completion, this qualification forms part of the eligibility requirements for applying for a builder licence through CBOS, recognised for both the Builder Domestic Licence and Builder (Low Rise) Licence. Career opportunities include Licensed Builder (Low Rise), Construction Supervisor, Site Supervisor or Site Manager, and Leading Hand positions. You may also continue your studies through pathways to CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) or CPC50320 Diploma of Building and Construction (Management).
