Biology 1A introduces students to the fundamental concepts of molecular and cellular biology, exploring how life operates at the molecular level through the study of macromolecules, cells, energy metabolism, and genetics. Ideal for first-year undergraduate students pursuing science, biomedical, health, or related degrees.
Students should have familiarity with general biology and fundamental general chemistry concepts. No formal prerequisites are required, though assumed knowledge of basic biological and chemical principles is expected. Students must have access to required laboratory equipment including a lab coat for practical sessions.
The course is structured around five major subject areas: Biology Foundations covering fundamental biological concepts; Cell Biology examining cell structure, function, and organization; Metabolism exploring energy production and utilization pathways; Molecular Biology focusing on DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis; and Genetics covering inheritance patterns and gene expression. Practical laboratory components are integrated throughout, requiring students to execute experiments, analyze data, and present findings in scientific formats.
