Earn a Bachelor of Mathematics and Master of Data Science in just 4 years. This dual degree combines strong mathematical foundations with advanced data science expertise, preparing you for high-demand careers in technology, finance, and analytics across global industries.
Applicants must have completed Queensland Year 12 or equivalent with General English (Units 3 & 4, C), Mathematical Methods (Units 3 & 4, C), and Specialist Mathematics (Units 3 & 4, C) recommended. The minimum entry score threshold is ATAR 97 or IB Rank 40.75. International students must meet English language requirements: IELTS overall 6.5 (reading 6, writing 6, speaking 6, listening 6), TOEFL iBT overall 87, or equivalent qualifications. Student visa eligibility applies for international students.
The program offers six major specialisations: Applied Mathematics (mathematical modelling, numerical methods, real-world problem solving), Mathematical Artificial Intelligence (statistics, linear algebra, deep learning, machine learning), Mathematical Physics (quantum theory, relativity, statistical mechanics), Optimisation and Operations Research (decision-making, resource allocation, supply chain optimisation), Pure Mathematics (abstract thinking, theoretical foundations), and Statistics and Mathematical Data Science (statistical analysis, data interpretation, forecasting). All majors can be combined with minors in bioinformatics, computational science, computer science, physics, or science communication. The Master of Data Science component covers advanced computing, statistics, mathematics, and electives in business, finance, health or science, with practical experience in data analysis tools and techniques.
The University of Queensland is ranked 1st in Queensland for mathematics and physical sciences (QS World University Rankings 2026) and 1st in Queensland for mathematics (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026). UQ has more national teaching awards than any other Australian university, ensuring world-class instruction. The program's vertical dual degree structure is unique, allowing students to complete two qualifications in the time typically required for one, while maintaining rigorous academic standards and industry-relevant skills development.
Graduates are prepared for diverse career opportunities including Data Scientist (A$115-135K annually), Machine Learning Engineer, Business Intelligence Analyst, Big Data Engineer, Data Architect, Quantitative Analyst, Risk Analyst, Supply Chain Analyst, Actuarial and Analytics Consultant, and Data Miner.
