Become a qualified builder with this government-accredited Certificate IV in Building and Construction. Learn to plan projects, manage sites, and run your own construction business while meeting building codes and safety standards.
Applicants must complete a Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) online test to demonstrate required literacy and numeracy levels. A Pre-training Review interview is required to ensure the course suits your needs and that you are likely to complete successfully. While not mandatory, relevant construction industry knowledge and completion of a relevant trade qualification or equivalent trade experience is recommended. Students must have access to a laptop/computer with internet, digital camera or video camera, and smartphone.
The course comprises 19 units: 11 core and 8 elective. Core units cover applying building codes and standards for Class 1 and 10 buildings, managing work health and safety, planning building and construction work, supervising site communication and administration, applying legal requirements, applying structural principles, reading and interpreting plans and specifications, preparing building sketches and drawings, applying site surveys and set-out procedures, minimising waste on site, and applying building codes for Class 2 to 9 Type C buildings. Elective units include project quality management, construction contract administration, cost estimation, labour and material scheduling, construction material procurement and storage, business dispute resolution, building applications and approvals, and energy-efficient building science principles.
GOTAFE is a government-accredited Registered Training Organisation (RTO 3094) delivering nationally recognised qualifications across Northern Victoria. The institution provides comprehensive student support services including learning support, counselling, disability support, and career guidance. As part of the Free TAFE scheme, eligible students can access this qualification at significantly reduced cost, making quality construction training accessible to all.
Graduates are eligible for roles as Builders, Construction Supervisors, Site Managers, Site Supervisors, and Leading Hands in the construction industry. The qualification can be used as part of an application to become a Registered Builder working on low-rise residential and commercial construction projects. Further study opportunities include the Diploma of Building (CPC50210) for career advancement into senior management and project leadership roles.
